The event is intended to present to governments and stakeholders the IPBES report on the state of biodiversity and ecosystems services, and potential policy approaches in Europe and Central Asia.

Programme

The event will focus on biodiversity and ecosystems services, and policy solutions in the European and Central Asia region:

  • Present the findings of the report on the state of biodiversity and ecosystems services in the Europe and Central Asia region.
  • Discuss potential policy approaches and gaps for preserving biodiversity and ecosystems services.
  • Mobilize relevant stakeholders.

The invited participants are governmental representatives of countries of the Europe and Central Asia region, as well as scientific, environmental and business stakeholders.

The event is organized around oral presentations of the findings of the report and a panel discussion involving government representatives, stakeholders and the co-chairs of the report, Prof. Markus Fischer (Switzerland) and Prof. Mark Rounsevell (UK). The official language of the event is English.

The Director of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, Mr. Marc Chardonnens, will make the opening statement. Dr. Anne Larigauderie, the Executive Secretary of IPBES, will make opening remarks.

The event is followed by PESC-5, the 5th Pan-European Stakeholder Consultation for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

5th Pan-European Stakeholder Consultation for IPBES (PESC-5)

This event brings together biodiversity stakeholders from Europe and Central Asia in support of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. The meeting includes the presentation event of the IPBES report on Europe & Central Asia (ECA) on the first morning.
In June 2018 IPBES presented the summary for policymaker of its Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for Europe and Central Asia in Bern.

Politicians can now act against biodiversity loss

On 6 June 2018 the IPBES report on Europa and Central Asia was presented to governments and stakeholders. The report summarizes the state of biodiversity and ecosystems services, and potential policy approaches in Europe and Central Asia.

Weltbiodiversitätsrat verabschiedet ersten Zustandsbericht für Europa & Zentralasien

Die Biodiversität in Europa und Zentralasien hat einen enorm hohen Wert für die Region, aber schwindet Jahr für Jahr. Immer mehr Menschen werden längerfristig in ihrer Lebensqualität beeinträchtigt. Dies besagt der erste vom Weltbiodiversitätsrat IPBES erarbeitete Zustandsbericht für Europa und Zentralasien. Die ExpertInnen zeigen diverse Handlungsmöglichkeiten auf und empfehlen, die Biodiversität und die Leistungen der Natur für den Menschen künftig viel stärker zu berücksichtigen. Der Bericht wurde zusammen mit den Zustandsberichten zu Asien-Pazifik, Amerika und Afrika und einem Bericht zur Landdegradierung am 22. März 2018 in Medellìn (Kolumbien) verabschiedet. IPBES, die Zwischenstaatliche Plattform für Biodiversität und Ökosystemleistungen, fasst damit erstmals den Zustand der Natur und die Folgen für die Menschen weltweit zusammen.
