«Via GeoAlpina» is a joint initiative of the National Committees from six countries belonging to the alpine realm, namely: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. This project represents the second international initiative launched in the frame of the International Year of Planet Earth. Switzerland's participation is handled via the Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) and the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT).
The aim of the «Via GeoAlpina» initiative is to describe geological, geomorphological and hydrological highlights along the "ViaAlpina" trekking trails from Trieste to Monaco (see www.via-alpina.org).
Freely available documentation will give hikers and trekkers of all ages an opportunity to discover the secrets of planet Earth and the history of the Alps. Geological explanations are always related to landforms that can be observed on-site along the selected trails. Infomations can be downloaded from the Web, are available at tourist offices or are transmitted via guided excursions.
The Via GeoAlpina itinary selected for Switzerland follows a segment of the international red trail and the joins the swiss national green trail of Via Alpina.
