Conservation of Natural Resources

The goal of the project is to build up open-access knowledge platforms in the Horn of Africa and East Africa to provide water relevant data and information from various sectors to relevant stakeholders. This knowledge will then be processed into tailor-made products for sustainable decision-making and political processes at local, regional, national and transnational level. ->> Budget: CHF 10 Mio

Our objective is to bring evidence to the question whether community-based disaster risk reduction contributes to strengthen community resilience in disaster prone areas and to enhance the effectiveness of disaster mitigation. ->> Budget: CHF 24 Mio

To analyze the reasons for yield gaps encountered by smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and to develop innovations, together with those farmers, to close these gaps in a sustainable manner. ->> Budget: CHF 4 Mio

This project aims to creating a knowledge base to develop strategies for sustainable intensification of smallholder family farms in sub-Saharan Africa and implement and evaluate those new farming systems. Moreover, it is planned to conduct training and capacity building at all levels. ->> Budget: CHF 20 Mio

The aim of the project is to assess and combat the expansion of invasive woody plants by enhancing control measures in affected areas and by developing and implementing prevention, early detection and rapid response in areas so far unaffected. ->> Budget: CHF 3 Mio

The objective of this proposed work is to develop biophysically, institutionally and economically acceptable innovations for increased productivity, food security, profitability and environmental sustainability of neglected tropical root and tuber crops. ->> Budget: CHF 4 Mio

This project aims to model and apply integrated land-use approaches to guarantee sustainable food production and ecological integrity. Agroforestry practices based on empirical evidence should be promoted in mosaic landscapes and deforested landscapes to enable small and mid-size farms to provide an additional source of vitamins and micronutrient and income. ->> Budget: CHF 600'000.-

This project aims to produce a standardized methodology for the long-term monitoring of the progress of Nigeria towards a Land Degradation Neutral state. ->> Budget: CHF 250'000.-

The aim of this project is to introduce multiple ecosystems services provided by community-supported agricultural practices linked to forest conservation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. ->> Budget: CHF 6 Mio

This project intends to enable the development of best cassava agronomic practices in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. It will do so by developing site-specific recommendations based on smallholder farmer resources and demands to overcome their specific yield gap, by offering a decision-support framework to bring recommendations to scale and by developing scientific capacity within the national research systems. ->> Budget: CHF 7.5 Mio

This project aims at creating methods to assess and monitor the impact of grazing in forest landscapes and to develop tools that allow farmers and forest managers to assess the state of their land and to support the implementation of sustainable grazing plans. ->> Budget: CHF 3 Mio.

This work aims to assess the biophysical and socio-economic potential of various integrated soil fertility management practices to increase maize yield, enhance soil fertility, mitigate climate change and improve livelihoods from local to national scales in Kenya and Uganda.
