No sustainability without north-south research

Why we need global partnerships to address the SDGs, Isabel Günther, NADEL ETH Zürich

The 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerns us all. Global challenges such as the climate crisis, cybercrime, migration, biodiversity loss, terrorism or pandemics are urgent and require global solutions.

Against this background, in 2018 the KFPE invited its associated research institutions to put forward ideas on how research could support implementation of the SDGs.

In response, researchers from 22 institutions have developed project ideas that still need to be elaborated with partners from low- and middle-income countries (LIMICs). The project ideas are very varied, ranging from relatively specific research questions to extensive research programs. All projects are planned in collaboration with researchers in LIMICs, and underscore the benefits Switzerland and partner countries would derive from the drawn up initiatives. The project call resulted in a wealth of interesting research opportunities that underline the need for research in such challenging environments and could contribute to the implementation of the SDGs; because the SDGs can only be achieved in cooperation with these.

The project ideas outlined here are meant as snapshots. They do not represent the entire Swiss research community nor individual universities, but rather the ideas of the researchers who participated in this call. Researchers who feel inspired by our initiative are welcome to submit their project ideas for this website
