Environmental issues and mitigation strategies are among the most important topics of our time. Individual awareness and behaviour as well as economic developments and political decisions are linked to environmental deterioration, and in turn have severe impacts on the society. Using analytical and empirical tools, social sciences can play a key role for identifying and disentangling different pathways through which individual awareness and behaviour, social and economic structures, geographical patterns, and political actions are linked to environmental issues. In this workshop, we want to connect environmental research fromsociology, economics, psychology, geography, political sciences, communication studies, education, and related environmental social sciences. Possible topics include:

  • Current issues and future perspectives of climate change mitigation
  • The causes and consequences of environmental deterioration
  • Adaption and acceptance of new sustainable technologies and mitigation strategies
  • Individual environmental consciousness and behaviour
  • Environmental social dilemmas
  • The geographical and social distribution of environmental hazards
  • The link between political action, economic performance and sustainability
  • Methodological aspects of environmental studies in the social sciences

Keynote speakers:

  • Prof. Dr. Thomas Bernauer (ETH Zurich)
  • Prof. Dr. Henning Best (University of Kaiserslautern)
  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Diekmann (University of Leipzig)

Organisation:

Contributions from researchers in an early stage of their career are especially appreciated. The number of participants is limited to 25. The workshop is organized like a “mini conference”, and participants will present and discuss their research (20 min talk and 10 min Q&A).
