Global voice for the natural and social sciences and the humanities

More than 180 national and international science organisations decided on 26 October 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan, to create a global umbrella organisation for the natural and social sciences and the humanities: the International Science Council. This represents the merger of the two organisations International Council for Science (ICSU) and International Social Science Council (ISSC).

Joint ICSU-ISSC meeting, Taipei, October 2017

The International Science Council will engage in three areas at the global level: scientific policy advice, above all towards the UN institutions, science policy to represent the concerns of the scientific community as well as to safeguard the principles of freedom and responsibility in science. The founding assembly of the new umbrella organisation will take place in July 2018 in Paris. Representing the interests of the Swiss scientific community, the Swiss Academies of Sciences (SCNAT) and of the Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHS) were so far members in ICSU and ISSC respectively. Both academies welcome the merger and will introduce matters of interest to Switzerland also in the new umbrella organisation.
