The Swiss Geological Society and swisstopo organized a one-day workshop on digital field data acquisition and data management on Thursday, October 13th, 2016.
Field geologists increasingly use handheld devices and computers (smartphones, tablets, rugged laptops, GPS, digital compasses) for field data acquisition. Although a number of applications exist for Windows, Android and iOS mobile devices to assist in field data acquisition such as FieldMove, Lambert and GeoCompass, each of these applications has issues, which limits their functionality or integration in an efficient workflow. Moreover, as each geologist develops a particular workflow for geological mapping and sampling using his or her own methodology and conventions, data sharing and collaboration becomes challenging.
The workshop consisted of nine presentations in the morning and a hands-on session in the field in the afternoon. The workshop attracted over 70 participants from industry, academia and administration, and confirmed the interest in exchanging ideas on hard- and software, methods and work flows to improve our ways of acquiring and managing field data.
The workshop took place at swisstopo in Wabern and was organized by Roland Baumberger, Sabine Brodhag, Jean-Luc Epard and Guido Schreurs.
