No matter if you are an amateur or a professional photographer, a scientist or non-scientist, you can participate together with friends, colleagues and family and have a nice and enjoyable time together.

How does the Science Photo Marathon work?

I. Competition (27thof September 2019)

  • 08:30 Participants meet at the Zoological Museum (ZM) of the University of Zurich.
  • 08:30-09:00 Accreditations, introduction, instructions and photo-themes (topics) are revealed.
  • 09:00 Start of the competition. Participants have to produce 8 competition pictures, 2 in each of the following institutions: Zoological Museum, Zoo Zurich, University of Zurich (Irchel) and Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science & Technology (Eawag). Note that all institutes are in the city of Zurich, except the Eawag that is in Dübendorf.
  • 17:00 End of the competition. Participants have to hand in their 8 competition pictures at the ZM before 17:00. Photos submitted after this time are not included in the competition.
  • 17:30 An apéro is organized for all participants at the Zoological Museum.

II. Photo screening (5thof October 2019)

12:00 - 14:00 All submitted photos are screened in the cinema of the Zoological Museum.

III. Award ceremony (16thof November 2019)

  • 11:00 The prize-awarding ceremony is held at the Global Science Film Festival in the Filmpodium Cinema (Nüschelerstrasse 11, 8001 Zurich). All participants of the marathon receive an entry to the Global Science Film Festival for the film screened prior to the award ceremony.

Awards

  • The winners of each category (total of four categories) are awarded a CHF 500 prize.
  • The second best of each category (total of four categories) are awarded an annual pass to the Zoo of Zurich (the value for the annual pass is CHF 130).

Conditions

  • All kinds of digital cameras (including smartphones) are allowed.
  • Accessories with the camera (filter, light…etc.) are allowed.
  • Start with blank memory card.
  • Photo format: only JPEG are accepted. Maximum size is 100 MB and minimum resolution is 2000 x 3000 pixels (16.9 x 25.4 cm to 300 dpi).
  • Digital touching: It is not permitted to post-process the images with an image editing program such as Photoshop.
  • You can move from one place to another walking, with a bicycle or using public transport only!

The registration deadline is the10thof September.

Registration fee
CHF 15 to be paid on the day of the competition, the 27thof September at 08:30.
Entrances to all locations for photographing are free of charge, including the Zoo of Zurich.

Judging criteria
Photos will be judged by content (according to theme) and effective photographic presentation.

The terms of use regulated by the involved institutes (Eawag, UZH, ZM, Zoo) have to be considered.
