Swiss woman becomes Special Envoy for Science in Global Policy

Flavia Schlegel has been appointed by the International Science Council (ISC) as its inaugural Special Envoy for Science in Global Policy. Her tasks are to amplify the visibility and voice of the international scientific community within the UN and other global policy fora, such as the G20, by building the Council’s identity and presence at the highest political levels.

The purpose of which was to bring together researchers and stakeholders from the Global South to identify: (1) What constitutes best practice in research partnerships (2) How to engage researchers and governments from the Global South in research programme agenda setting (3) How to translate research outputs into development impact.

Stronger integration and dialogue between science and society for the SDGs

More than 70 high-level decision makers, scientists, NGO and funding agency representatives gathered to celebrate 20 years of KFPE Guidelines at the conference “Leveraging Research Partnerships for Global Challenges”. A series of talks presented in three separate sessions addressed the following topics: (i) new roles and tasks of science in general and research partnerships in particular; (ii) regional adaptation of scientific systems; and (iii) how science policies and funding systems can support transformative research. Participants were left with one clear conclusion at the end of the 22 November meeting: stronger integration and dialogue between science and society, including policy and business, is essential if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030: Roadmap shows what’s needed in each sector

The roadmap is based on the Carbon Law - a scientific paper published in 2017 that shows that halving carbon dioxide emissions every decade to 2050 is consistent with the Paris Agreement’s aim to keep global average temperatures well below +2°C and aim for +1.5°C. An international team of experts from research, technology, and NGOs synthesised over 60 reports and academic analyses assessing scenarios related to very low greenhouse gas emissions.

The International Science Council (ISC) creates a single organisation that serves as the global voice for the sciences. The ISC is the result of the merger of International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The founding General Assembly took place on 4 July in Paris.
