Prix Schläfli 2020 for the best four PhDs in science

The orbits of dwarf galaxies, forces in materials such as Teflon, tracing history through pollen, a new protective layer at root tips – these are the topics for which the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) has awarded the Prix Schläfli 2020 to the four most important insights gained by young researchers at Swiss universities. Alice Berhin (Biology), Oliver Müller (Astronomy), Robert Pollice (Chemistry) and Fabian Rey (Geosciences) receive the prize for the findings arrived at in their dissertations. Four of the candidates for the Prix Schläfli award were also selected as Young Scientists at the internationally prestigious 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.

What large-scale research facilities does Switzerland need?

The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences have been requested by the Confederation to prepare roadmaps for research infrastructures for the various scientific fields. These roadmaps will provide a basis for decision-making on the allocation of federal funding for costly research facilities over the period 2025–2028. SCNAT is responsible for implementing this new procedure within the Swiss Academies, and Secretary General Jürg Pfister believes that it offers the scientific community an opportunity for wider involvement.

SCNAT honours the four best dissertations in sciences

The storage of radioactive waste, the pollination of plants, the use of solar energy, and the mathematical parsing of knots and surfaces – the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) will honour the four most important discoveries and solutions by young researchers at Swiss universities with the Prix Schläfli 2018 in Bern on 25 May. Alexandre Bagnoud (Geosciences), Livio Liechti (Mathematics), Hester Sheehan (Biology) and Xiaojiang Xie (Chemistry) win the prize for discoveries made while working on their dissertations. The Prix Schläfli has been awarded since 1866.

«Moving Boundaries» specialist conference and public lecture

Boundaries, like those formed by different rock strata in the mountains, colliding continental plates or the tree line are particularly clear indicators of how our planet forms and changes. For this reason, transitions between materials or systems are hot topics in the geosciences. From 17 to 18 November, 600 earth science specialists will meet in Davos for the 15th Swiss Geoscience Meeting focussing on "Moving Boundaries". This year's conference of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) is being organised by the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF.
