Call for Abstracts: MRI Sessions at AGU Fall meeting 2019

Taking place in San Francisco 9-13 December 2019, the AGU Fall Meeting 2019 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to draw inspiration from each other and show how earth and space science enables a more resilient and sustainable future for all. There are a number of exciting, mountain-related sessions – including two convened by the MRI. Abstract submission is now open and the deadline for all submissions is Wednesday 31 July.

Call for Abstracts: Taking Stock of Transformative Research & Education on Mountains. What Future Avenues?

The CIRM, MRI, and the Forum Landscape, Alps, Parks (FoLAP) are organizing a symposium on the future of research and training for the transformation of mountain regions. Contributions from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities working on this topic, both in Switzerland and around the world are welcome. Deadline 30 August.

Call for Papers of Special Issue on "Mountain landscapes: protected areas, ecosystem services and future challenges"

This Special Issue aims at addressing important knowledge gaps focusing on basic understanding of ecological functions and its drivers of change in mountain landscapes as well as on societal trends in and outside mountain regions to be able to scope with future challenges. A particular focus is set on protected areas that are interested in the management and the preservation of the biodiversity and the landscapes, through scientific research, environmental education, and the promotion and the development of sustainable tourism.

This can lead to more competition or new conflicts in water use, both locally and across borders. This Policy Brief highlights the needs for political action and management options to avoid potential water conflicts in future.

Call for papers: Mountain Biodiversity and Sustainable Development

Mountain biodiversity provides billions of upland and lowland inhabitants with vital ecosystem services and sources of livelihoods. Mountain Research and Development is looking for papers that present validated insights into ways of managing mountain (agro)biodiversity so that it contributes to human wellbeing; that analyze interlinkages between mountain biodiversity, global change, ecosystems, and people; or that offer evidence-informed agendas for research or policymaking with regard to these interlinkages.

Top of Europe: ausgezeichnete Forschung auf 3450 Metern über Meer

In Zeiten, in denen sich viele Länder Europas abschotteten, eröffnete die Schweiz die international ausgerichtete Forschungsstation Jungfraujoch. Mehrere Nobelpreisträger haben dort geforscht. Die Station erhält 2019 gleich zwei Auszeichnungen als bedeutende historische Stätte der Naturwissenschaften. Die Europäische Physikalische Gesellschaft honoriert die Verdienste in der Physik und die Akademie der Naturwissenschaften Schweiz jene in der Chemie.

SCNAT creates the largest knowledge network on the landscape

Sprawl, loss of landscape diversity and biodiversity, mountain landscapes marked by climate change: Starting in 2019, the Academy of Natural Sciences (SCNAT) is merging various of its activities in the new Landscape, Alps, Parks Forum. The goal is to better protect Switzerland's landscapes in collaboration with politics and society and to utilise and manage them more sustainably. This fusion will create the largest knowledge network in Switzerland on natural and cultural landscapes. Designated president is Felix Kienast of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). Furthermore, new presidents are also being appointed in other SCNAT units.

Thomas Scheurer – zwischen Alpen und Nationalpark

Über 30 Jahre hat Thomas Scheurer die Forschung in den Alpen und im Nationalpark mitgeprägt. Er leitete die Geschäftsstellen der Forschungskommission des Nationalparks und der Interakademischen Kommission Alpenforschung. In dieser Zeit habe sich der Umgang der Menschen mit dem Alpenraum verändert, konstatiert Scheurer. Sorge macht ihm, wie sich gewisse touristische Zentren entwickeln.
