Opportunities and challenges for research on food and nutrition security and agriculture in Europe

Climate change will affect our food systems. Scientists in Europe call for urgent changes in diet and agriculture to mitigate the impact.

To reduce the contribution of diets to climate change, efforts are necessary to influence consumer behaviours because the overconsumption of calories and meat results in excessive agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Changing dietary consumption could also benefit human health. The mitigation of climate change impacts also requires land-sparing and agronomic management practices together with climate-smart agriculture and plant breeding innovations to cope with drought.

The report by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) is a part of a global project led by the InterAcademy Partnership with three complementary reports on the Americas, Africa and Asia.
