Phenological Phases

Phenological Phases

A plant goes through various stages of development – so-called phenological phases – during the yearly vegetative phase:

  • Budburst

  • Leaf-out

  • Flowering

  • Fruit ripening

  • Leaf coloration

  • Leaf fall

While the last three stages are self-explanatory, the first three require a clearer definition. The scheme below should help

Every stage of development has a beginning, a main time and an end.

Beginning: The first three are visible

Middle: 50% of the phenomena occurred

End: 95% of the phenomena have occurred
