Frederik Baumgarten wins the 2019 phenology competition
How much cold temperatures do trees need to come out of their winter dormancy?
Frederik Baumgarten won the 2019 phenology competition with his project "Chilled to be forced: the best dose to awaken buds from winter dormancy". As part of his doctoral thesis, Frederik Baumgarten conducted several experiments at WSL to answer this question. His work is helping to classify species according to their need for cooling and to better understand how phenology might change under warmer winter conditions.
