Persistently high pesticide levels found in small streams
Small watercourses are contaminated with large numbers of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. A study commissioned by the Federal Office for the Environment shows that the legal requirements specified for water quality are not met in any of the five Swiss streams investigated. Indeed, thresholds for acute toxicity to aquatic organisms were also exceeded. Bioassays indicate that biological communities are adversely affected by mixtures of substances. Measures to improve water quality are currently being developed in the national “Action Plan on risk reduction and sustainable use of plant protection products”.
Gleichzeitig wurde vom Bund entschieden, den Schutz der kleinen Gewässer ab dem 1. Mai zu vermindern. Es müssen von den Kantonen keine Gewässerräume mehr ausgeschieden werden. Der Gewässerraum ist eine Pufferzone entlang der Gewässer, die nachweislich auch gegen die Wasserverschmutzung durch Pflanzenschutzmittel hilft. Die hydrologische Kommission ist beunruhigt über diese Entwicklung, da diese Ökosysteme von enormer Bedeutung für die Biodiversität sind und bereits jetzt und weltweit am stärksten bedroht sind.
