What are the legal requirements for animal facilities?

There are legal regulations and minimum standards, which must be strictly adhered to in animal experiments, and which are controlled by the authorities. Every laboratory animal facility requires a permit and must be constructed and equipped in such a way that it meets the needs of the animal species kept in it and complies with legal requirements. For the managers of an animal facility, recognised training and regular continued education courses are mandatory.

May I visit an animal facility?

Some animal facilities can be visited. However, if there are safety concerns for the animals or the environment, it is not possible or limited. Especially with rodents, strict hygiene regulations must be observed to protect the animals from pathogens visitors could bring into the facility. In some animal husbandries where, for example, microbiological research is being conducted, it is essential to prevent pathogens from being released into the environment.
