
Prix Schläfli 2026 award for the four best dissertations in natural sciences
Valeriia Hutskalova (Chemistry), Julian Rogger (Geosciences), Astrid Stubbusch (Biology) and Andrea Weibel (Astronomy) were honoured with the Prix Schläfli 2026 for findings made in the context of their dissertations. Through this prize, the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) singles out the four most significant insights of young researchers at Swiss universities. The Prix Schläfli has been awarded since 1866.

Andrea Weibel discovered that galaxies grow up surprisingly quickly
Prix Schläfli 2026 for Astronomy: He has always been interested in the “big questions of the universe” and immersed himself in the origins of the universe for his thesis at the University of Geneva. Andrea Weibel will now receive the Prix Schläfli for his work on the emergence of very young galaxies.
Jugendliche gewinnen Medaillen an Astronomie-Olympiade
Am vergangenen Wochenende fand an der Universität Bern ein Wettbewerb für junge Weltallnerds statt. Die 16 Finalistinnen und Finalisten der Schweizer Astronomie-Olympiade berechneten die Geschwindigkeit von Raumschiffen, schätzten die Energie von Gaswolken und beobachteten den Jupiter durch ein Teleskop. Die Top 5 wurden mit Goldmedaillen ausgezeichnet und werden die Schweiz Ende September an der Internationalen Astronomie-Olympiade in Vietnam vertreten:

ISSI/ISSI-BJ 2026 Joint Call for Proposals for International Teams in Space and Earth Sciences
The International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern (Switzerland) and ISSI-BJ in Beijing (China) invite proposals for establishing International Teams to conduct collaborative research in the Space and Earth Sciences at their respective meeting facilities.

Julian Sonner is the new President of Platform MAP
Julian Sonner, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Geneva, starts in 2026 as new President of the Platform MAP. He succeeds Ernst Meyer, Professor of Physics at the University of Basel, who served as President for seven years from 2019 to 2025.
